What is a Weighted Blanket?

A weighted blanket is basically just what it sounds like: a blanket filled with some kind of weighted materials (commonly plastic pellets or beads) designed to provide comforting, deep pressure to the user. Occupational therapists (OTs) often recommend them to children with sensory needs — such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, or sensory processing disorder (SPD) — because they can have a soothing effect on the nervous system.

Numerous children battle with sleep, which implies that their parents unavoidably do, as well. Sleeping issues are a common topic in social circles, parent support groups, with family, and the pediatrician.
Some Children are "good sleepers" and others seem like they have never learned to sleep. Even when you think you've got your child figured out, some seem to change their sleep patterns overnight, without explanation. Sleep is one of those basic human needs and it affects the whole family.
You would do anything to catch some extra minutes of sleep! Many parents are purchasing weighted blankets to help their children sleep better during nap time and at night.

Some children don’t process information from their senses as well as others, so they seek it out or avoid it more. A lot of children have unique sensory needs, and may respond well to a weighted blanket, and have no diagnosis. But, children with Autism and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) have definite sensory needs, which is why weighted blankets are often recommended for children with these diagnoses.

Signs Your Child May Respond to a Weighted Blanket:
Loves sleeping or laying under piles of blankets or heavy comforters.
Enjoys crawling into tight spaces or behind furniture
Has difficulty (even after a lot of physical activity) relaxing and sitting still
Likes wearing heavy sweatshirts and sweaters
